Past Simple

 

  We use past simple to talk about:

 

1-past actions which happened one immediately after the other.

2-past habit or state.(used to+infinitive)

3-complete past action/event which happened at a stated past time.

4-complete past action/event which happened at a stated or implied time reference.

5-an action which interrupts another past action in progress.

 

 

Structure:

 

           Affirmative:        — regular: Subject+ Verb(d-ed-ied)

— Irregular: they are variable and must be learnt by heart.

 

 

         Negative:           — didn’t (infinitive)

 

 

Interrogative:     -Did +subject+v(infinitive)…………..?

 

    Time Expressions: yesterday

Last week/month etc

Auxiliaries:

Present perfect:

 

-Complete past actions connected to the present with stated or unstated time reference.

 

1-They have gone to Italy.(unstated time-we don’t know when they went –they are still staying there)

 

2-I have met Jane in the club this morning.(stated time-it’s still morning-action connected to the present)
